If you think a student submitted an AI-generated image, the safest first move is a conversation, not a sanction. Check the image with the visual clues, look at where it came from, and run it through a detector as one signal among several. Then talk with the student about how it was made. A detector score is a reason to ask, never proof on its own.

The bigger opportunity is turning the moment into a lesson. Students meet synthetic images constantly, on social feeds and in group chats. Teaching them a repeatable check is more useful than policing a single assignment.

Why false positives matter in a classroom

Every detector produces false positives, and edited or heavily compressed real photos are the most common trigger. A student who cropped a photo, applied a filter, or saved it through a messaging app can end up with a high AI score through no fault of their own. Wrongly accusing a student damages trust, and it teaches the wrong lesson about how weak a single score can be.

The inverse also happens. Well-made AI images pass, especially at low resolution. Treat any single result as one clue.

A classroom-safe workflow

  • Check the source. Ask where the image came from, then run a reverse image search to find the earliest version.
  • Score it. Run a detector as one signal. A mid-range score means uncertain, so do not present it as a conclusion.
  • Talk it through. Ask the student to walk you through how they made the work. The conversation is the goal, not the verdict.
