AI Art Checker: Check if Art Is AI-Generated
AI Check scores an image for signs of AI generation, and that includes digital art, illustrations, and prints shown in a listing. Use it as an AI art detector before you buy or commission a piece, and treat the score as evidence to weigh, not proof.

What an AI art checker can and can’t tell you
The checker reads pixel patterns linked to AI generation and returns a 0-100% score. A higher score means it found more signals associated with AI-generated images.
| AI score | Result | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| 0–29% | Likely authentic | Compare the original source with what the photo claims to show. |
| 30–69% | Inconclusive | Try the original file and examine the image’s source and details. |
| 70–100% | Likely AI-generated | Look for the creator’s disclosure and check the details in the image. |
It does not name the generator, it does not prove who made the work, and it cannot see the artist’s process. Digital paintings, heavy filters, upscaling, and compression can all push a score either way. For more on what scores mean, read Do AI image detectors work?.
Check art before you buy or commission it
Etsy prints, Vinted drawings, Displate posters and merch
- Save the largest listing image you can. If you can’t, take a screenshot and crop it to the artwork, without the price, buttons, or page chrome.
- Check it in the app, or upload it to the web checker.
- Check a second listing photo from the same seller, such as a close-up or another angle, since one image can mislead.
- Look at the art itself: lettering, hands, edges that melt into the background, and texture repeated across the piece. Our guide to spotting AI-generated images covers the visual checks.
- Run a reverse image search to see whether the same piece appears elsewhere under other sellers’ names.
Working from a screenshot? Screenshots can change the score, so use the original when you can.
Before you commission an artist
Check 2 or 3 portfolio pieces, not one. Ask for work-in-progress files, sketches, layered files, or a short process video. Agree in writing on whether AI tools may be used. A detector score is a reason to ask questions, not to accuse.
Marketplace rules
Etsy’s Seller Handbook says: “Sellers must disclose within their listing description if an item is created with the use of AI.” Read the listing description before you buy.
When two detectors disagree
It happens: one tool says 100% AI and another says no AI for the same image. Different detectors are trained on different data and set different thresholds, so a split result is not a sign that either tool is broken. Treat it like the 30-69% band, as inconclusive.
Recheck with the original file, check a second image, and weigh the source, provenance, and seller history. Content Credentials help when a record is present, but a missing record is not proof either way. The 60-second image check covers the order to work in, and our guide explains how to compare detectors fairly.
Art made with Midjourney, ChatGPT or Gemini
Some generators add provenance: OpenAI attaches Content Credentials and Google SynthID to its images, and Google adds SynthID to Gemini output. Midjourney embeds neither. Use the matching guide:
AI art checker questions
Can an AI art checker prove a piece was made with AI?
No. It gives a likelihood score, not proof. Use it together with the source, the artist’s process, and the seller’s history.
Can I check art from an Etsy or Vinted listing?
Yes. Save the largest listing image, or crop a screenshot to the artwork. Screenshots can change the score, so use the best version you can get.
Why did two AI detectors give different results?
They use different models and thresholds. Treat a split result as inconclusive and check more evidence.
Is the AI art checker free?
The AI Check app is free to download. In the browser, one photo check per day is free with no account. After that it’s 1 credit per image, with packs from US$4.99.
Does it work on digital paintings and illustrations?
It scores any JPEG, PNG, WebP, or GIF up to 10MB. Heavily edited, filtered, or upscaled art is harder to read, so treat middle scores with care.
